St Johns Hill Methodist Church
Since the spring of 2006 when the Methodist Church building in St. John’s Hill needed to close, the Methodist congregation have been able to worship at St.Chad’s and share the facilities for both worship and fellowship. In an act of modern partnership, Methodists worship alongside Anglicans and whenever possible the two congregations share friendship and fellowship while remaining two distinct congregations.
Visitors to St.Chad’s will find a warm welcome to any of the services, but if you are looking for a specifically Methodist form of service then the service at 11.15 a.m. each Sunday will provide a Methodist service for people of all ages. At 6pm on Sundays, the services are shared with the 1st, 2nd and 4th being an Anglican rite, and the 3rd and 5th being Methodist.
During these early days, many friendships have been formed and the spirit of Christian unity has been visible not only in the sharing of the building but the support that each is able to give the other. From time to time services have been shared for special occasions such as civic services or services to mark special events. The two congregations have regularly worked together for example to provide Lenten lunches, to promote closer fellowship, and when opportunity arises to work together in response to any emergency appeal or need for help.
Without losing any of the distinctive traditions that belong to St.Chad’s and to St.John’s Hill, Christian worship and fellowship are nurtured in the sharing of one building and by the encouragement and support each bring to the partnership. In as much as not one but two denominations provide differing styles and traditions of church life in one place, the unity of Christians in a shared experience is a witness to a Church that is One in Christ.
